Overview:  The 2011 Dodge Dakota is a good workhorse for those who need towing, hauling, and power. It can tow more weight than any other compact or mid-size truck in its class, thanks to an optional impressive V8 engine.  The 2011 Dodge Dakota is a good workhorse of a small truck, with its large towing capacity, storage options, and optional V8 engine.

Ram Dakota Exterior:  The Dodge Dakota's styling is acceptable, while the Extended Cab models of the Dodge Dakota feature two small rear-hinged doors, Crew Cabs are outfitted with four independent, standard-size doors.

Ram Dakota Interior:  With available seating for up to six passengers, the 2011 Dodge Dakota continues to lead its class in passenger capacity.  The basic ST trim is only available with an Extended Cab, but you can upgrade to the Big Horn/Lone Star trim in order to get a Crew Cab.  The premium Laramie trim is not available with the Extended Cab, so your only seating option for that trim level is the Crew Cab.

The Dodge Dakota remains the only compact pickup that seats six, thanks to the option of a front bench seat that can replace two standard front bucket seats. You can add options like heated leather seats.

Among the many standard features equipped on the ST Extended Cab are bucket seats and an AM/FM/CD stereo system with four speakers and tilt steering wheel. Plastic bins located in the floor beneath the rear seats in the Crew Cab models provide extra storage that can keep cargo from rolling around on the floor.

If you move up the trims, features standard on the Laramie Crew Cab include an upgraded stereo system with wheel-mounted audio controls. With the exception of an added rear 60/40-folding seat, interior features standard on Big Horn/Lone Star Crew Cab trim levels are the same as the Extended Cab. The Dakota also offers on its upper trims MyGIG, an information and entertainment system with a 6.5-inch LCD screen and voice-activated GPS navigation.

Every Dakota Crew Cab maintains 46.5 cubic feet of cargo room behind the first- row seat, Extended Cab trim levels maintain just 39.0 cubic feet of cargo room. Opting for the Crew Cab decreases bed length by about a foot.   The Crew Cab's "Crate 'N Go" rear-seat storage system consists of two collapsible plastic crates that hide in the floor under the rear seats.

Ram Dakota Performance: The 2011 Dodge Dakota’s available V8 engine offers best-in-class towing.  All trims come standard with a 3.7-liter Magnum V6 engine that makes 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. The upgraded Big Horn/Lone Star and Laramie comes with a 4.7-liter V8 Flexible Fuel Vehicle engine (optional for the other trims). The V8 has 302 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.

The Dakota features front independent suspension and live axle rear suspension.  According to most reviewers, the Dakota's handling capabilities don’t stand out, falling short of the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma. While the Dakota has the largest towing capacity of all compact pickups, most reviewers didn't have a chance to test it. The Dakota can tow up to 7,200 pounds when properly equipped, which is well ahead of many competitors.

Ram Dakota Safety: The 2010 Dakota Crew Cab earned top scores of five stars for driver and passenger safety in frontal crash tests, as well as five stars for both front- and rear-seat safety in side crash tests. Both the 2WD and 4WD models get four-star rollover ratings.  The 2010 Dakota Extended Cab received the same scores as the Crew Cab in all tests except the side passenger crash tests, which were not available for the Extended Cab. Dodge has added two standard safety features to its 2011 models, four-wheel anti-lock brakes and side-curtain airbags. Every Dodge Dakota comes outfitted with a tire pressure monitoring system, front disc brakes and rear anti-lock drum brakes. Dakotas also come with front multistage air bags, which quickly assess the severity of a crash and inflate with varying levels of needed force. Available crash protection options for all trims include supplemental side air bags that cover two rows, and the now-standard side curtain air bags.

The 2011 Ram Dakota has received very good reviews from the auto press.  Here are some excerpts that our New York Ram Dakota shoppers would find interesting:
