Overview:  The 2011 GMC Terrain gives compact SUV buyers refinement, high-tech standard features and great fuel economy. It stands out with a long list of standard features, which includes a rearview camera, something that’s a rare standard feature even among luxury SUVs. The Terrain is more refined and carlike than the competition, making it an excellent choice for a family Crossover SUV.

GMC Terrain Exterior:  The Terrain exterior is boxy and truck-like, with styling that stands out, which can be considered a plus in a generally conservative class.

GMC Terrain Interior:  The Terrain's quality cabin is especially quiet, spacious and stylish. The rear seats are roomy, which is quite a compliment for a compact SUV and makes the Terrain a good choice for families. Rear space is aided by the manually sliding rear seat, which allows passengers to adjust legroom. The base model comes with cloth seats, while the SLT comes with perforated leather and heated front seats.

The Terrain is very well-equipped for such an affordable vehicle and for its class. The base model comes standard with a rearview camera, remote keyless entry, a tilt and telescopic steering column, an iPod interface (with USB port) and XM Satellite Radio. For more upscale features, you may want to upgrade to the SLE-2, a higher trim of the base model, which adds automatic climate control, Bluetooth phone connectivity and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls.

You have to upgrade to the SLE-2 to get many of the Terrain's extra options, which include heated front seats, remote vehicle start, a power sunroof an audio system with navigation, and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. The DVD system is particularly impressive for an affordable SUV. It comes with a dual seatback display and can play two DVDs at a time. It also comes with two wireless headsets.

The Terrain provides 31.6 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in use and 63.9 with the second row folded down.

GMC Terrain Performance:  The all-new Terrain has great fuel economy, which is excellent for an SUV and bests nearly every vehicle in its class, especially on the highway. Equally impressive is the Terrain's smooth ride and handling.

The Terrain's base 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine makes 182 horsepower, while an optional 3.0-liter V6 makes 264 horsepower. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission (no manual is available). The V6 offers slightly stronger acceleration, although its power is more apparent in its towing capabilities than its speed. Along with better fuel economy, four-cylinder models have the advantage of "Eco" mode, a button which alters the drivetrain to maximize fuel efficiency – getting you even more miles per gallon.

With either engine option, the Terrain has tow ratings up to 1,500 pounds with the four-cylinder and 3,500 pounds with the V6.

The Terrain offers a smooth, comfortable ride. The 17-inch wheels come standard on the base model, while the SLT upgrades to 18-inch wheels. There are also optional 19-inch wheels for higher packages available on the base-model and SLT.

GMC Terrain Safety: The Terrain boasts many safety features that are impressive for its affordable price. These include dual-stage frontal airbags, thorax side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger airbags, and head curtain side-impact airbags. Other standard features are anti-lock brakes, one year of Onstar service and a StabiliTrak stability control system with traction control. The Terrain even comes with a standard Rear Vision camera on base models -- a very rare offering within its class. It's also unique because the camera shows up on the rearview mirror, which allows the driver to use the camera and mirror at the same time. Rear Parking Assist, available on SLT models only, comes with a rearview LED display and audible alarm.
